GOSPEL

At City Church, we anchor our beliefs and teaching in the good news of Jesus Christ—the Gospel. The Gospel is God’s rescue mission to win back a fallen and sinful humanity. God does this through the person of Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity. This message is applied to our hearts by the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity. God saves us from our sins by free, unearned grace through faith in the life, death and resurrection of Christ. This is done completely apart from our works or moral efforts. City Church believes that this message touches every area of our life. It is the message that keeps s from falling into religious legalism or relativism.

COMMUNITY

Since we believe that the gospel changes us in every possible way; we believe that we are freed to be honest, intimate and transparent in our relationships. This creates a new sort of community. It is out of this community that real kinship and transformation take place. So we will always favor organic community as venues of discipleship over programs driven by church staff. To this end, small group bible studies are essential to our mission.

CITY

St. Petersburg is full of God’s image, design and beauty. From the beautiful art in our city galleries to the painted alleys behind the 600 block, the downtown restaurants to the music filling the streets each weekend, St. Pete radiates with the truth, goodness, and beauty of Jesus. As such, we are a church that is committed to seek the good of St. Petersburg. We do this by faithfully loving and serving in the heart of the city – the downtown area of St. Petersburg.

Our Story

In the spring of 2013, some friends approached the Woodall’s about starting a new church in downtown St. Petersburg. After a year of weighing options and looking at opportunities, a church in Tampa stepped forward to provide oversight and support to begin a church downtown. The Woodall’s spent a year getting to know the St. Pete community and praying together with friends in their living room, before holding City Bible studies at the Campus Grind downtown in 2015. From 2017-2018, City Church held Sunday worship in an office building space on 1st Ave N. By the grace of God, City Church continues to grow and currently meets at the AMC Sundial Movie Theatre located at 151 2nd Ave N.

When you visit City Church, you can expect a mix of ancient worship patterns and modern music, avoiding both uncomfortable novelty and stuffy traditionalism. We are committed to the preaching of the Word of God and the sacraments of Communion and Baptism. You will find things that seem familiar and things that seem foreign, but all of these things together point us as a community to the good news of Jesus’ redemption.

All are welcome regardless of personal or religious background. City Church is here for the convinced and the unconvinced, the lost, the found, the burned, bored, cynical and the spiritual. We invite you, no matter where you are in the process, to City Church.

Why a Rooster?

Many people ask why we chose to have a rooster as the centerpiece of our logo. There are three reasons we highlight the rooster.

First, the rooster is a symbol of dawn and new life. This is a perfect picture of the way that the message of Jesus calls us into new life in him. A new day is possible. The darkness will not always win. The Gospel has sounded the birth of a new day.

Second, the rooster is a historic symbol of the reformation. Many early reformation churches used a rooster on their steeple. We are a new church, but we are part of a larger and ancient Christian tradition.

Finally, there is significance to our city’s namesake. We live and minister in Saint Peter’s town. The rooster is a symbol of Peter’s doubt and restoration to the faith. We hope to be a church where Christians, doubters, and skeptics can gather to hear the good news of restoration and redemption.
